Bernie Sanders gets top mention in the current progressive movement. He is considered by many to be the founder of the current progressive movement. Born September 8, 1941, in Brooklyn, Sanders is an American politician. A United States Senator from Vermont since 2007, who, having previously run as an independent, Sanders registered as a Democrat and ran competitively against Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic Primary. His campaign was notable, in part, because he raised more money in small, individual contributions than any other politician in American history. He received international recognition from the campaign. He is now returning to the Senate as an independent. Given his age, he is not expected to make another presidential bid, but is expected to remain as the primary leader of the Progressive Movement for some time.
Sanders has been an active progressive and an inspiration for his entire adult life. He arrested at a 1963 anti-segregation protest in Chicago. He was later found guilty of resisting arrest and fined $25.
In August 2016, Sanders founded Our Revolution, an organization dedicated to educating voters and encouraging involvement in the political process, including recruiting and supporting candidates for local, state, and national offices.
He has been prominent among those speaking out for the rights of Native Americans and protection of the environment and supporting the Standing Rock Water Protectors.
